Rules & Regulations
Potential participants are requested to refer to the EU-IDC’s “Guide for Debaters”. The text below is summarised information only.
Tournament Format
- Day 1 will be the elimination rounds → 10 rounds of debating (20 teams) and only 8 teams will advance to Day 2 (based on score).
- Day 2 will be the knock-out rounds, which comprise:
- Quarter Finals → 4 rounds of debating (8 teams)
- Semi Finals → 2 rounds of debating (4 teams)
- Grand Final → 1 round of debating (2 teams)
- The Grand Final will be held on Friday, 18 November 2011 at 15:30.
Team Format
- Each round of debate has two teams: affirmative team and negative team.
- Each team has three debaters (speakers), who each speak once.
- One round is for a total duration of 26 minutes.
Adjudicators (Judges)
- Each round will be adjudicated by a panel of 3 adjudicators.
- However, the grand final round will be adjudicated by at least 3 adjudicators as it will include EU ambassadors and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.
- The adjudicator’s job is to assess the strength of the team's arguments (matter), the presentation and delivery style of the speakers (manner) and the structure and timing of the speeches (method).
Motions
- For each round, the two teams (affirmative team and negative team) will debate a certain topic (motion) which will be announced in advance (prior to the tournament).
- The affirmative team must speak for the motion.
- The negative team must speak against the motion.
